Gohar Mehsud ist ein pakistanischer Journalist aus Südwaziristan nahe der pakistanisch-afghanischen Grenze und Experte für Stammesgebiete in der Region. Er berichtet seit mehr als 14 Jahren über religiösen Extremismus, Korruption, Menschenrechte, genderbasierte Gewalt gegen nicht binäre Personen und Frauen, religiösen Extremismus und vermisste Personen. Seine Auftraggeber sind nationale und internationale TV- und Radiosender, Webseiten und Zeitungen.
Mehsud schrieb aus erster Hand über Militäreinsätze, ihre Folgen für die Zivilgesellschaft und die geopolitischen Auswirkungen des Konflikts auf beiden Seiten der Grenze. Er hat die Nachrichtenseite Mizha News mitgegründet und ist Generalsekretär der Pakhtun Journalist association (PJA) in Islamabad.
In seinen Berichten beleuchtet Mehsud zudem die Kämpfe von Frauen in Konfliktgebieten und konservativen Gesellschaften. Er beschreibt ihre Widerstandsfähigkeit, aber auch die Diskriminierung und Gewalt, der sie oft ausgesetzt sind. Mehsuds Berichterstattung über vermisste Personen hat dazu beigetragen, das Bewusstsein für das Thema in der Region zu schärfen.
Wegen seiner Arbeit wurde Gohar Mehsud bedroht, belästigt und eingeschüchtert. Trotz dieser Herausforderungen möchte er weiter berichten.

Gohar Mehsud is a Pakistani multimedia journalist from South Waziristan, which is close to the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. He works in English, Pashto and Urdu and is an expert on tribal areas in this region. For more than 14 years, he has covered conflicts related to religious extremism, Taliban and corruption, human rights issues, gender-based violence against women and non-binary people, and missing persons for national and international media including television, radio, websites and newspapers. Mehsud's work has offered insights into the complex dynamics of the region's socio-political landscape.
Mehsud reported first-hand on military operations, their impact on civilian populations, and the overall geopolitical implications of the conflict at both sides of the border. He is one of the co-founders of the multimedia group Mizha News and the general secretary of the Pakhtun Journalist association (PJA) in Islamabad.
With his reporting he has highlighted the struggles of women in conflict zones and conservative societies, shedding light on their resilience, but also on the discrimination and violence they often face. Mehsud's coverage of missing persons has played a role in raising awareness for this issue in the region. He also covered the ideological underpinnings of religious extremism and its impact on society.
In the course of his work, Gohar Mehsud was threatened, harassed, and intimidated. His coverage of sensitive topics made him a target for various actors. Despite these challenges, he continues reporting because he is determined to bring a positive change through his work. Mehsud is a current fellow of the Rest & Resilience Fellowship, a joint program by RSF and the taz Panter Foundation.
