Expectations have greatly increased over the years for long-term sustainable and research-based projects that focus on media development. These pose new challenges for media development organizations.The 2015 symposium brings together a wide range of experts to discuss and present new methods and concepts as well as ways they can effectively be applied and continue to improve the quality of media development projects.

Input: Gabriella Razzano, Open Democracy Advice Center (ODAC), Cape Town, Südafrika
Gabriella is a law graduate working at ODAC as the head of research. She has a BA LLB from the University of Cape Town, graduating with distinction in Sociology. She formerly clerked with Justice Yacoob of the Constitutional Court and worked with University of Witwatersrand. She has a particular focus on access to information and freedom of expression issues, and has served as an active member of the Right2Know Campaign, Coordinating Committee Member of the National nformation Officers Forum and is an Honourary Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Public Sector Lawyers Association.
The rights-based approach as a framing concept offers a new perspective on media development. Taking this concept seriously means deriving consequences from Article 19 and developing strategies based on them. What are the advantages of such a value-driven development cooperation in media development? How participative is this concept?
