In Slovenia, a populist prime minister is challenging the independence of public media. In Slovakia, political upheaval since the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak has swept away the old power elite – and brought into government another populist. What does this mean for the work of journalists in these two countries, and how can the EU help foster more media freedom there?

As part three of a series of events discussing the media situation in Eastern Europe, RSF Germany will host an online discussion about current media freedom developments in Slovenia and Slovakia. The panel titled “Populism, press freedom and the EU” will include

  • Beata Balogová, editor-in-chief of SME daily (Slovakia), and
  • Blaž Zgaga, freelance investigative journalist and RSF correspondent (Slovenia).
  • Moderator: Christoph Dreyer, RSF Germany

Time: Wednesday, 27th January 2021, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Place: live on online platform BigBlueButton

The discussion will be held in English. Please e-mail us at event@reporter-ohne-grenzen.de to receive a login link to BigBlueButton – or follow the event’s live stream on YouTube, Facebook or Twitter.
